It's Not Only a Door

A garage door keeps your car in the garage and intruders out of the garage — but it's so much more than a sheet of metal or wood! Modern garage doors typically feature insulated panels to improve energy-efficiency. They can be coordinated with smart home systems for easy operation, and they come in an array of fun colors. We urge you to take your time when shopping for a garage door. Fully weight your options, and take time to learn about them, too. That learning can actually begin right here on this blog, which is dedicated to the very topic of garage doors.

3 Smart Ways To Increase The Security Of The Garage Door

The garage door is a huge moving door that allows your vehicles to enter a covered and insulated parking area. If you are not careful with the security of your garage door, it can also allow an intruder easy access to your home as well.

Way #1: Add Lights Around Outside the Garage Door

One way to increase the security of the garage door is by making sure it is well lit. An intruder is a lot more likely to see if they can open the garage door if the outside area is dark.

You don't have to have to install stationary lights; motion-controlled lights are a great security measure. Motion-controlled lights will turn on whenever motion is detected around your garage door area.

Outdoor motion lights will increase security around the garage door and make the area more visible.

Way #2: Add a Side Lock

Many people don't have a lock on their garage door at all; they just open and close the door with the garage door opener. However, it can be smart to have an internal siding lock on the inside of the garage door that you can manually lock and unlock.

A lock is great for when you are going out of town for an extended period. It is also great if you have something inside of your garage door that you want to keep safe. A side lock is not something you will probably use on a regular basis, but it is something that you may want to use when you want to keep your garage extra secure.

Way #3: Keep Your Door in Good Shape

Finally, take good care of your garage door. Make sure the hinges on the door are secure and not loose. You don't want someone to break in by damaging a panel on your garage door.

Pay attention to the weather stripping around the garage door. If the weather stripping gets worn down or even falls off, that will give someone space to get a grip on your garage door and open it, as most modern garage doors don't have external door handles.

If the garage door has damaged windows, you need to get the glass replaced in the garage door. A broken window can make it easier for someone to open the garage door and gain entry to your house.

Your garage door can be an access point to your home if you don't keep it secure. You can increase the security of your garage door by adding external motion lights, adding a side lock, and keeping your garage door in good shape.
